The Year 2026 Dubbed the Year of the Frog Game.

My key observation from the recent Day of the Devs showcase was highly engaging, my primary conclusion was not the intended one: I am convinced that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.

A surprising total of five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these hoppy characters. Considering a collection of frogs is called an army, it appears they are launching an invasion.

The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians

Croaking characters are anything but new to the gaming landscape. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a niche presence. However, their prevalence has markedly surged in recent times.

A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an staggering number of results. Granted, some of these are obscure titles, a sizable number are serious Frog Games.

Tracking the Tadpole Trend

To grasp this rise, I conducted a detailed review into the recent history of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My approach was somewhat arbitrary, counting games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The findings reveal an unmistakable trend: a steady increase from less than 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.

This significant surge prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The creature's growing prominence in the cultural zeitgeist is partially evident elsewhere, for example the resurgence of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. However, the trend in gaming looks especially powerful.

Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage

Honestly, this is a trend I can fully endorse. Frogs offer built-in appealing traits for game developers.

  • Unique Characters: They are incredibly easy to be designed as quirky characters that often become a highlight in any game.
  • Unique Gameplay: Their elastic legs and sticky tongues lend themselves to a wide array of innovative control schemes.

Several the featured titles directly leverage these traits. Examples include the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

What the Future Holds

So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even begun—and the possibility for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the biggest year yet.

Should these games find success—and based on past trends, games from this showcase often do—we could very well be entering a full-blown croaking cultural moment.
