Rare Scarlet Lightning Photographed in Skies
A team of photography enthusiasts based in the island nation have recorded images of crimson flashes, counted as the rarest atmospheric displays on Earth, where glowing scarlet illuminations become visible in the sky.
A Memorable Night of Discovery
This group of artists began their evening to photograph the galactic core over the Ōmārama Clay cliffs in the lower part of the country on 11 October, before encountering the extraordinary event.
They thought they would be blessed to get optimal conditions that night, but their night turned into “a night to remember,” a team member stated.
While reviewing his files for a Milky Way panorama and discovered he had photographed scarlet atmospheric flashes,” the individual noted. “The discovery was astounding – we experienced joyful noises and all sorts going on in the darkness.”
Defining Red Sprites
The scarlet phenomena are atmospheric energy releases in the mesosphere, produced by storm systems. Differing from conventional electrical strikes that strikes downward to the ground, these events shoot upwards towards the mesospheric region, producing shapes that are similar to pillars, carrots or even marine creatures. The earliest recorded picture of a such an event was taken – accidentally – in 1989, by a research unit at the a academic organization.
Fleeting and Otherworldly Sightings
These events are extremely short-lived – lasting just a millisecond – that they are seldom seen to the human sight, but one photographer got lucky. “By chance, I was gazing right at a sprite when it took place – just a perfect coincidence viewing the right part of the sky and I witnessed a short crimson illumination,” he said.
Seeing the events was a goal for the artist, an honored dark sky artist. “It looks like you’re seeing an impossible sight, it appears mystical … there is an intense scarlet hue that is there for a split second, so it is captivating to observe.”
Advanced and Creative Mastery
Photographing a this phenomenon requires a mastery of specialized camera skills, as well as an familiarity with atmospheric physics and creative flare, he said. “It’s a really involved category of art that’s very rewarding as well.”
Another photographer commented it was counted as the “most incredible evenings” of his existence. “I could see the starry river illuminating above the distant edge while these giant scarlet filaments of illumination moved above a storm at a great distance,” he said.
A One-of-a-Kind Photographic Achievement
To his knowledge, there are no other images capturing scarlet electrical bursts and the southern hemisphere Milky Way in one frame.
“It was one of those moments when you realize you are seeing something that may not recur in your lifetime.”
